Battleships Potempkin (1925)- Odessa Steps Scene

We were recommended by Andrew to watch the odessa steps scene from 'Battleship Potempkin'.
I managed to find the scene on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ps-v-kZzfec.

It's a silent film in back and white, which i should have guessed when i saw the year!
It's a pretty bizarre clip.  It starts with a bon voyage scene of a ship, then gunshots are heard, and there is a guy with no legs hooning around on his hands!  It turns into a massacre with some guys that look like the military, gunning people down.  Its almost comedic in places, the acting is pretty shocking!

At 4:36 there is a great shot of a woman holding her just killed son (i assume its her son), with the shadow of the men shooting cast across the floor, after just asking them to not shoot.  She then gets shot.

The rest of the scene is people running down, what i can only assume are the 'odessa steps'.  The scene ends with a baby in a carriage rolling down some steps, but apparently. surviving.

I wasn't exactly overwhelmed with inspiration after watching this clip, but it certainly was a good insight into how old movies were made, and the quality.
